Who we are

Founded in 2001, and still answering our own phones

Margaret Whitfield-Hale opened Oak Haven Counsel LLP after a decade at a larger Raleigh firm, on a straightforward premise: a family sorting out an estate deserves the same attention as a corporate client, and should not have to pay downtown rates to get it.

Twenty-five years later the firm is five attorneys and eight staff, working out of a restored building on Oakwood Avenue a few minutes from the Wake County Courthouse. We have stayed that size on purpose. It is large enough to cover six practice areas properly and small enough that the attorney you meet at the first consultation is the one who handles your matter through to the end.

What we believe

How We Practise

Plain answers

We tell you what we think will happen, including when that is not what you were hoping to hear. A client who understands the realistic range of outcomes makes better decisions than one who has been reassured.

Settle where sensible, try where necessary

Most matters should not end in a courtroom, and most of ours do not. But we prepare every file as though it will, because that preparation is usually what makes the settlement possible.

No surprises on the invoice

Fee structures are agreed in writing before work begins. Where a matter is predictable we quote a flat fee; injury work is on contingency; hourly billing is itemised and sent monthly.

In the community

Pro bono and local work

Each attorney at the firm commits to at least fifty hours of pro bono work a year, most of it through Legal Aid of North Carolina and the Wake County Bar Association's volunteer clinics.

We also run a free monthly wills clinic for first responders and their families, held at the office on the second Saturday of each month. Appointments are limited and usually book a few weeks out.

Why Clients Stay With Us

How We Work

01
You work with your attorney

The lawyer you meet at the consultation is the one who handles your file. Nothing is quietly handed down to someone you have never met.

02
Fees agreed in writing, up front

Flat fees where the work is predictable, contingency for injury claims, hourly where it genuinely fits. You get the number before we start.

03
Calls returned the same business day

Every message is answered by close of business, even when the answer is that there is nothing new to report yet.
